La bacteria, perteneciente a una nueva especie, a la que han llamado Herminiimonas glacei, es diminuta (0,043 micrómetros cúbicos, o sea, unas 50 veces menor que nuestra conocida bacteria intestinal Escherichia coli), técnicamente es una ultra micro bacteria, y su tamaño, junto con su capacidad de vivir en ambientes con muy poco oxígeno, su alta resistencia al frío, y su capacidad de disminuir notablemente su metabolismo cuando hay pocos nutrientes, le han permitido sobrevivir en este ambiente durante este tiempo, aunque todas sus funciones vitales estaban reducidas al mínimo y se procesaban de una forma terriblemente lenta.
Se supone que la bacteria sólo se reproducía cada algunas centenas o incluso miles de años, pero, tras mantenerla seis meses a 2 grados y después más de 4 meses a 5 grados, empezó a reproducirse más rápidamente, formando colonias. Y, aumentando la temperatura hasta 18 grados, la bacteria sobrevivió y mantuvo su actividad, lo que indica que puede vivir en ambientes bien diferentes de aquel en el que la encontraron.
Este descubrimiento reviste mayor importancia si tenemos en cuenta que las condiciones en las que vivía son relativamente similares a las que se pueden encontrar en los polos de Marte, o en el océano congelado de Europa (satélite de Júpiter), con lo que las especulaciones sobre encontrar vida fuera de la Tierra han ganado un nuevo argumento.
